External recognition and accreditation

The excellence and outstanding quality of the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus departments and institutes are recognised with external accreditations, over and above those necessary simply to carry out our activities. These national and international appraisals are proof of the good work done on the Campus.

We have assembled them here, together with participation from our professionals in various organisations, editorial boards and other bodies that bring prestige to them and to the Campus.

Excellence

Certifications granted by scientific institutions or societies are a recognition and a reflection of the quality of healthcare, teaching and research activities.

The Campus is a centre with extensive experience in rare diseases. We take part in various European Reference Networks as a centre highly specialised in certain rare diseases. In addition, we are the hospital with the highest number of National Healthcare Reference Units (CSUR) in Spain.

In Catalonia, we form part of the Clinical Expertise Units Network (XUEC), together with the Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell and Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. This is a leading network in diagnosis and care for people affected by a specific group of rare diseases. Other departments and units have been recognised by different bodies for their quality and excellence.

Excellence also refers to the treatment of and facilities for professionals. Since April 2015, Vall d'Hebron Research Institute has been recognised by the European Commission for excellence in human resources with the HR Excellence in Research seal.

Accreditation of management models

Continual improvement, safety and patient satisfaction are the pillars that support the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus management model Which is why the institution works according to the International Standards Organization (ISO) regulations in certain areas of action, in terms of both the Hospital and the Research Centres.

Thus, the Hospital also holds accreditation as a Catalonian Acute Hospital Care Centre, inspired on the EFQM 2013 model, and dependant on the Department of Health. This accreditation audits the organization externally, in relation to a set of established standards, in order to determine its level of quality. As well as this accreditation, the Hospital also holds other international credentials, such as, for example, the accreditation for Paediatric and Adult Hematopoietic Transplant processes (as per the JACIE Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT-EBMT model) or the Certification in phase 1D of the Initiative for the Humanization of Assistance to Birth and Lactation (iHAN), among others.

The Campus research centres, Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) also hold accreditations that exceed requirements. Both are recognised as Healthcare Research Institutes (IIS) by the Carlos III Health Institute. This accreditation places them among the elite in the field of hospital research, and recognises the high-quality translational research carried out.

The commitment of the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus goes further. Which is why it continues to work on new projects, such as the designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC), within the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). This project integrates Vall d’Hebron into a community of centres that are European leaders in sharing good practices and improving response to the needs of patients with cancer.
